Apple releases new operating system

Apple’s new iOS 4 – claimed by the Californian vendor to be “the newest version of the world’s most advanced mobile operating system” – is now available for free download. Apple fans reluctant to upgrade to the new iPhone 4 smartphone (available from Thursday), which includes the new operating system (OS) as standard, can experience some of the new features of the OS by downloading the 378 MB software update. The update adds several new features, including a limited amount of multitasking, folders, iAd, iBooks and GameCenter. Many other minor updates are on board too, including more advanced photo sorting and better HTML5 video support. iOS 4 works with existing iPhone 3GS and iPhone 3 models, although multitasking is available only on the 3GS version. A version of the OS for iPads is not currently supported (due in September). iPod Touch owners can also get the update for free.

Apple’s iPhone 4 device itself (pictured) boasts Apple’s new FaceTime video calling service, the new Retina display, a 5-megapixel camera with LED flash, HD video recording, support for iBooks, Apple’s A4 processor and a three-axis gyro that should herald significant strides in mobile gaming and iPhone 4 Cases.
